Volunteers Needed – Círculo de Lectura
Do you have 30 to 60 minutes once a week to help promote literacy at our school? Círculo is MME’s 100% volunteer powered, take-home reading program for all students in grades K-3. Volunteers are currently needed for this school year! We cannot provide books to our students every school day without volunteers for all classes.
Sign up in your child’s classroom at Back to School Night on September 10th, or contact program coordinator Leah Weidinger (leweidinger@gmail.com) to let us know when you can volunteer!
What is Círculo de Lectura?
Círculo is MME’s volunteer-run reading program. This program is in place for students in grades K-3. Students are encouraged to read a provided spanish book for 20 minutes a night, and then log their reading progress for prizes. Reading 5 nights a week helps improve spanish vocabulary, and is hugely beneficial to student (and parent!) literacy.
If I want to help, what do I do?
All you need to do is reach out! We have a lead volunteer who can help you find a shift and answer extra questions.
Sounds Easy. Why do you need my help?
While this program can be easy and fun for our children, it does take a lot of volunteers. Running Círculo takes upwards of 60 volunteers donating their time EACH WEEK, for a collective effort that amounts to more than 1 full time job. We love our volunteers, and making this wonderful program run for the year takes a lot of parent and grandparent help.
That’s a lot. Do I have time to help?
A volunteer shift only takes about 30-45 minutes to complete, and is only once a week. Timing is flexible; you can come in during the day any time between when kids start school, and about 30 minutes before the end of the school day. You can learn how to participate in english or in spanish, so being bilingual is not needed to help with our program!
What if my child’s class doesn’t have a volunteer for every day?
That’s ok. They’ll get a new círculo book to read every day there is a parent volunteer. On days they don’t have a volunteer for their class, they can re-read the book already in their bag. Reading the same material again is great for learning!
I’m interested but I have more questions.
Great! We have a bunch of commonly asked question here for you to look at.
